The problem
A studio in Sri Lanka selling to clients in the EU, the UK and the US is asking a stranger to trust it across a continent. Price starts the first conversation. It does not win the second one.
The mark
The brand begins with one shape, the Ceylon drop. It is a drop of ink, a seed, “a single point of origin, which is the honest description of what a laboratory is”, and it is the silhouette of the island. In the wordmark it replaces the dot on the i of Ceylai: the i of AI.
The identity is strictly black and white. The brand book gives the reason in one line: a colour is a claim. The eight-page brand story book sets out the mark, the wordmark (a heavy “Ceylai” and a light “Labs”, separated by weight rather than a space) and the rules for using them.
The drop on every CEYLAI page is fitted, not traced. It was measured as a circle with two fitted curves and then compared with the artwork pixel by pixel: 0.46% of edge pixels differ, in 91 bytes of SVG path. That is what makes it cheap enough to inline everywhere, including the favicon of this site and the full stop of its wordmark.
The business
- Positioning: a digital growth partner rather than a vendor.
- Model: fixed-price projects, then retainers.
- Pipeline: a zero-cost prospecting workflow and a 90-day plan.
- Roles: I lead client work, from winning it to reviewing every delivery. A team builds to the standard.
The House Standard
Quality that depends on who is having a good day is not quality. The House Standard is a quality layer applied to every CEYLAI build, covering accessibility, performance, honesty about unknowns and verification by script rather than by eye. This site is built to it; the list is further down the home page.
The outcome
Operating, with eleven builds in the studio register, from ventures such as Northlight and Pandama.lk to client sites such as Reliance Business Partners, Ceylon Getaways and Serendib Exports, and a working call centre prototype.
